Our animation

We have been working in groups to make the animation film so me, Dom, Minnie and Vlada decided to create a time based sequence of images to portray college and different still aspects of college coming to life in a humorous way. We started by making a mindmap of all our ideas. We began by thinking of what our animation would be, originally it was planned to be a time-lapse animation but unfortunately college didn't have the right equipment to support this concept so we decided on a stop motion animation inspired by the cbbc animated TV series "Ooglies".

We decided on focusing the imagery around the light switches, the paintbrushes and palette knives, The guillotine and the draws.

Dan Ojari

Dan Ojari is another film-maker I looked at for artist research as he is an award winning animation director who uses stop motion animation and scale models to tell stories. Dan Ojari is also the co-founder of Parabella studios.

Artist research

I looked at other artists for inspiration before making my animation, one of these artists was John Smith. An award winning film maker who uses humour to explore the assumptions of the viewer. John Smith influenced me to use humour in my own animation and go against the assumptions of the viewer on what college life is like for example by bringing different still aspects of college to life using a series of still photographs built up to make a storyboard and animation film. I looked at two of John Smith's famous film pieces, the girl chewing gum and Om.

Phenakistoscopes and zoetropes

During this project I have researched into phenakistoscopes and zoetropes to show how many different types of animations there are, for example as opposed to creating a film or using a selection of photographs to create an animation you can create a zoetrope which is a rapid series of images that appear to be a single moving picture. These are created by colouring the the blank side of the zoetrope template black as this creates contrast when viewing the images whilst spinning the disk that helps you see more clearly. You then draw a series of still images in or around each oval space. Then you push a pen into the centre circle of the zoetrope so you are able to spin the template therefore seeing the animation. I created my own zoetrope but unfortunately I am unable to upload a photo to this blog as the zoetrope isn't in my possession and I don't have a photograph of it

Unit 7

Unit 7 is based around animation, throughout this project I will be researching into different aspects of animation such as technique in film making, how to make a zoetrope and research into different animators such as John smith. Over the next few weeks I hope to achieve the producing of a short film animation which relates to my given theme of college life.
